Home readings are most useful when taken consistently and discussed with your health care professional. The CDC checklist covers practical steps you can build into your routine.
Set up before you measure
- Avoid eating or drinking for 30 minutes before a reading.
- Empty your bladder beforehand.
- Sit with your back supported for at least five minutes.
Position your body and cuff
Keep both feet flat and legs uncrossed. Rest the cuffed arm on a table at chest height. Place the cuff against bare skin, snug but not too tight, and do not talk during the measurement.
Keep a simple record
Write down the date, time, and reading in a method recommended by your clinician. Do not rely on one number alone or change medication based only on a home reading.
